SPAR Austria aimed to reach carbon neutrality for its business in Austria via insetting (humus projects). The potential of insetting SPAR’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions via humus projects together with Austrian farmers and winemakers had to be assessed by our team. The aim was to offset Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions either via domestic offset projects in agriculture or via the purchase of certificates from foreign countries.
Our solution
denkstatt conducted intensive research covering two topics:
- Carbon offsetting strategy (international and national projects) – purchase of verified certificates
- Carbon insetting strategy – assessment of the soil carbon storage potential (neutralization) from SPAR’s contracted farmers and winemakers.
Client benefit
The carbon sequestration potential of SPAR’s contractor agricultural areas and wineries was critically assessed. Recommendations for the improvement of the project towards international standards were given by our experts. Moreover, we provided options for the use of insetting.
